The second of three children, Ken was born into a reformed Jewish family in the Beverlywood section of L.A.
Ken attended Hamilton High School where he was a standout football and track athlete. He earned a scholarship to Long Beach State University and played wide receiver on the football team.
Ken graduated from Long Beach with a degree in Education. Following a successfull football career which included draft interest from the NFL's San Diego Chargers, he was injured and unable to continue his athletic career. He then turned his focus to Art and Teaching.
